Summary

Expert, dedicated guide, art historian to show you the most famous Vatican masterpieces, the unique Sistine Chapel and the largest Catholic church in the world.

Description:

The tour starts with a visit to the Belevedere Palace, originally a 15th century Loggia later converted into the Pium-Clementinum Museum, housing some of the most important Roman marble statue preserved in the Vatican, as well as the famous Apoxyomenos, Apollo, Laocoon Group, Belvedere Torso, the Marble Zoo, and many others.

Then, passing through a series of galleries, decorated with antique chandeliers and tapestries, and including the amazing Gallery of Maps, painted in the 16th century, your guide show you a part of the papal apartment with the beautiful rooms, decorated by the famous painter Raphael.

They are considered one of the masterpieces of the so called Florentine Renaissance.

After leaving the papal apartment it will be time to gape at the splendor of the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. It is one of the most famous cultural and artistic treasures in the Vatican City, known for being the place where the concleave and other official ceremonies take place and for being decorated with frescoes by Michelangelo, covering the vault and altar wall. The walls also kept a series of frescoes by some of the greatest Italian artists of the second half of the 15th century (Sandro Botticelli, Pinturicchio, Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio and others). Through a direct passage your guide will lead you in St.Peter Basilica. Considered the largest catholic church in the world, St.Peter was built between the 16th and the 17th century and contains an endless series of masterpieces including the bronze canopy that decorates the altar, built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the papal tombs, the imposing Cupola projected by Michelangelo and the famous Pieta, curved by him when he was just over 20 years.

A view of the spectacular St.Peter Square concludes the tour.
